В новом документальном фильме The Defiant Ones, Dre и Eminem первым делом отметили то, как почувствовали эффект взаимодействия при записи первого хита «My Name Is».
Dr.Dre:
Eminem:
Labi Siffre “I Got The…”
My name is…my name is…» и я довольный говорю «Yo, Stop! Sh*t’s hot’”.
В результате их сотрудничества альбом 1999 года Slim Shady LP, с заглавным треком «My Name is», дебютировал в чарте Billboard став четырежды Платиновым.

How Eminem and Dr Dre met.
How did Eminem meet Dr Dre? Have you ever wondered how these two awesome talents met?
The way Eminem and Dr Dre met is almost like a Cinderella story when you look at it from another angle. Let’s see how the two met.
It all started in 1997 when Eminem was facing serious financial problems. He was so broke that he could not pay for his rent and was therefore evicted from his home. But the young Eminem was determined not to give up on his dreams of becoming a rap superstar. He was 25 years at that time and had heard of the famous annual nationwide rap battle in Los Angeles called the Rap Olympics. Eminem burned with great desire to take part in the competition that he saved all the money he had and traveled to Los Angeles. The competition was keen as it saw unsigned rappers from all over the United States converging to battle it out, but Eminem’s talent saw him placing second. That was some great achievement for the young rapper.
Now, the thing about these rap competitions is the fact that staffs of record labels frequently attend these events in order to find new talented artists. Fortunately for Eminem, in attendance was a staff member of Interscope Records who loved Eminem’s performance and saw what he was made of. He therefore got a copy of the Eminem’s Slim Shady EP and sent it to the CEO of Interscope Records Jimmy Iovine.
Iovine listened to the record and then took the tape to the famous record producer Dr. Dre. Dr. Dre was so blown away by what he heard on the tape that he wanted to meet with Eminem right away.
According to Dr. Dre, the moment he heard Eminem on the tape, he told Iovine to find Eminem and bring the white rapper to him.
The funny thing here was that all the while Eminem idolized Dr. Dre, so he was totally starstruck and awe struck when he heard that Dr. Dre wanted to meet with him. Never in his wildest dreams did he think that one day Dr. Dre would want to meet and work with him.
“I had never seen stars, let alone Dr. Dre,” Eminem said in an interview.
Eventually the two met and Dr Dre signed Eminem to his record label Aftermath Records the following year after they met. This was in 1998. At that time, Dr Dre was was criticized heavily by many of his colleagues and partners in the music industry simply because he was working with a white rapper. Many of the people who criticized Dr Dre thought he was making a big mistake working with Eminem as that would have a major negative impact on his career. But Dr Dre listened to none of the criticisms. He believed in Eminem and went on to work with him and sign him to his record label. Eminem never let Dre down and worked extremely hard to prove the critics wrong. Eminem is presently considered one of the greatest hip-hop artists ever.
The electrifying chemistry between Dr. Dre and Eminem is undeniable. During the age when Vanilla Ice was considered the standard bar for vanilla rappers, Dr. Dre was the only one who took Eminem seriously. After a series of rap battles, an Interscope intern picked up Eminem’s Slim Shady EP cassette and passed it to Dr. Dre and Interscope CEO, Jimmy Iovine, and the rest is history.
Over the years, Eminem has been a loyal sidekick to Dr. Dre, and in return, the Doctor always backs the troublemaker up. From the time when the two were at the lowest point of their career to their little-known movie cameos, here are ten facts you might not have known about Dr. Dre & Eminem’s relationship.
Updated on December 1, 2021, by Michael Chaar: Eminem and Dr. Dre are regarded as some of the best in the business, and rightfully so. The two first crossed paths back in 1997 when Eminem performed a freestyle at The Wake Up Show, which Dre remembered. Since then, the two have produced, written, and performed together over the course of the last 25 years. Eminem reportedly wrote for Dre earlier on in his career and even convinced Dr. Dre to sign 50 Cent to his label! Since their time together, fans have regarded Relapse as their best collaboration together, and we can’t help but agree!
10 At First, Dr. Dre Didn’t Want To Sign 50 Cent But Em Convinced Him
Eminem made 2002 his playground, and the culmination of this was the signing of 50 Cent in a 50-50 deal between Shady Records and Aftermath Entertainment label Dr. Dre. In fact, Dre was reluctant to sign 50 at first. The New York rapper was dropped from Colombia Records two years earlier and blacklisted from the industry, but Eminem convinced Dre to sign him in a joint deal.
Then, 50 paid off their loyalty. 50’s 2003 debut album, Get Rich or Die Tryin’, became one of the highest-selling albums of the year by a debutant and is now 9x-Platinum certified.
9 Shady Records Was Born Because Dr. Dre Didn’t Want To Sign Eminem’s D12 Group To His Aftermath Label
Eminem’s boutique label, Shady Records, was launched in 1999 following the successful debut of The Slim Shady LP by the rapper himself and longtime friend/manager Paul Rosenberg.
After achieving mainstream success, Eminem fulfilled his promise to his D12 bandmates to sign them and shape their career. D12, consisting of six of Detroit’s illest emcees, went on to sign with Shady Records as the label’s first act. Initially, Eminem wanted Dre to sign the group but later decided to do it independently.
8 Eminem Announced His Sobriety In The Same Year Of Dre’s Son’s Death Of Accidental Overdose
After a series of controversies and the death of his best friend, Eminem succumbed to severe substance abuse and an overdose in 2007. After that, he took a little step back to rehab and regained consciousness until he announced his sobriety in 2008.
Unfortunately, Dr. Dre’s son, Andre, died of an overdose of heroin and morphine that same year. Both Em and Dre have had to endure each other during such difficult times.
7 Before ‘8 Mile,’ Eminem & Dre Starred In A Lackluster Comedy Called ‘The Wash’
The Wash is a DJ Pooh-produced comedy starring Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg as the main cast and Eminem as a mentally unhinged hoodlum seeking revenge. Released in 2001, The Wash met lackluster reviews from the critics, calling it a ‘sloppily-made, amateurish, and scarce on laughs’ movie.
Eminem went uncredited because he would make a significant character debut in 8 Mile a year later.
6 Eminem Used To Ghostwrite For Dre For Several Times
It is common knowledge that Dr. Dre uses ghostwriters sometimes. During his time with NWA, Dre served as the group’s leading producer, and Ice Cube mostly wrote his rhymes. Eminem wrote his lyrics in Forget About Dre and 50 Cent-assisted Crack A Bottle from Eminem’s Relapse album.
Even so, it doesn’t underestimate its impact on hip-hop culture. Dr. Dre is the most advanced sonic producer, and on top of that, the owner of the successful label that launched the careers of Eminem, 50 Cent, Kendrick Lamar, and others.
5 Dre Inspired Eminem To Go Over-The-Top On The Mic
Eminem is known for his screamy voice on the mic, but it’s Dr. Dre who inspired him to go completely ballistic. If you haven’t noticed, Eminem doesn’t scream much on his early albums, like the old Soul Intent tapes or Slim Shady EP, until Role Model from The Slim Shady LP, «Don’t you wanna grow up to be just like me?»
«My throat was hurting,» Eminem recalled about recording that part of the song. «Dre would be, «Again. Do it again.» And we stacked a few tracks to make the chorus.»
4 Despite Its Heavy G-Funk Influence, Dre Only Produced 3 Songs From ‘The Slim Shady LP’
After enlisting Eminem as Aftermath Entertainment’s new powerhouse, Dre didn’t take the time to collaborate with his new rapper. The result is The Slim Shady LP, a beautiful 14-song horror album that unleashes wild beasts in Em’s Slim Shady’s violent cartoon alter ego.
Although G-funk influences can be heard on this album, Dre ‘only’ produced three of the songs: My Name Is, Guilty Conscience, and Role Model, all of which were made for the album’s single. The production process is mostly handled by Detroit-based producer duo, Bass Brothers.
3 Eminem Wore A ‘Bright F*****g Yellow Sweatsuit’ When He Met Dre For The First Time
HBO’s 2017 docu-series Defiant Ones details Eminem and Dr. Dre’s very first encounter.
«So, Eminem comes in this bright, yellow f*****g sweatsuit. Hoodie, pants, everything. It’s bright f*****g yellow, Dre recalled their first meeting and how Eminem was starstruck in awe.
A couple of seconds went by, Eminem freely spat the infamous hook of My Name Is. The two ended up producing My Name Is and Guilty Conscience on that very same day.
2 Dre Almost Gave Up On Signing Eminem
Unfortunately, things don’t always go smoothly between the two. Dre almost gave up on signing Eminem because of the Detroit rapper’s skin color. «I didn’t know how many racists I had around,» Dre said. «My general manager had these eight by ten pictures of him, and he’s like, «Dre, this boy got blue eyes! What are we doin’?»
After hearing the conversation, Eminem flew back from California to Detroit, thinking that it would not work. He was recently kicked out of his home, and the two of them are at the lowest point of their lives.
1 ‘Relapse’ Is Eminem & Dre’s Most Collaborative Album
After falling from grace due to his deteriorating health condition, Eminem returned to the rap game in 2009 with Relapse. Although the album split fans in half, primarily due to its overused accent, Dr. Dre’s godly production can be felt throughout the album.
As of this writing, Relapse is the most collaborative project between the two of them, and Dr. Dre ended up producing all the songs, including the Relapse: Refill expansion.
NEXT: 50 Cent To The Game: What Dr. Dre’s Former Aftermath Artists Are Up To Now
It’s impossible to ignore the influence of Dr Dre. Not only did he create history as the architect of the NWA, but that’s just the first chapter of his story. Dre is a hip-hop legend in his own right and possibly the genre’s most treasured producer. On top of that, Dre also has an eye for talent, which is incomparable with anybody else around. His willingness to collaborate with artists based on talent alone, throwing name value out of the window, has opened doors for obscure rappers to break through and become stars, with Eminem being the ultimate success story.
Eminem was the rap-battle king of Detroit, and making it in the mainstream was nothing more than a pipedream. Before his fortunes dramatically changed and he became the hottest rapper on the planet, Eminem’s life couldn’t be further from glitz or glamour. He had a young daughter, Hailee, who he was trying to provide for while struggling with substance abuse problems.
Rapping offered him an escape and developed his Slim Shady alter-ego, which gave Eminem the perfect vehicle to plough all his pent up anger into, unleashing a style and flow that few have ever truly grasped. In 1997, he recorded and released his first EP under his new guise, which allowed him to get deeper and darker than ever before.
He’d released an EP the year before, also through local Detroit label, Web Entertainment, but his reputation failed to grow outside of his area. Instead, he kept battling as a way of staying sharp, ensuring that his rhymes were on point, should the opportunity arise.
That same year his fate changed at the flick of a finger after his performance at the Rap Olympics. It was at this seismic event that an intern from Interscope Records saw his performance and became mesmerised. Not only was Em a fearsome foe when it came to battling — lyrically, he is in a class of his own and on stage, his charisma shone through — but he had star power too. After this show, Marshall Mathers’ life would never be the same.
“I heard something in the kid who gave it to me,” Dre’s partner in crime, Jimmy Iovine, told Rolling Stone. “He was 19, an intern. He said, ‘I heard a tape on the street, at this rapathon.’ I said, ‘Tell you what – people helped me a lot when I was your age. I’m gonna do something for you. Bring me the CD, and I’ll play it to Dre. I trust you enough.’ It was a combination of the kid and what I heard. And it all came together. But that’s producing.
“I put him with Dre. I listen to music in my gym. Dre came by. I said, ‘Before you leave, take this. It’s a white rapper who sounds like his pants are on fire. He’s one pissed-off white guy.’ He says, ‘OK, I’ll check it out.’ — Dre says about six words a day. He calls me when he gets home: ‘Have this kid out here on Monday.’”
Although this kind of statement sounds like the stuff of hyperbole, Dre’s recollection of the event matches up with Iovine’s. The rapper and producer remembered: “In my entire career in the music industry, I have never found anything from a demo tape or a CD. When Jimmy played this, I said, ‘Find him. Now.’”
In the must-watch Netflix documentary, The Defiant Ones, which delves into how Dre and Iovine became the most unlikely yet formidable partnership in music, both the NWA rapper and Eminem look back at that special day when they first met.
“Eminem comes in in this bright yellow fucking sweatsuit, hoodie, pants, everything… it’s bright fucking yellow, and I’m like, ‘wow,’” Dre says, remembering his first impression of Shady. Meanwhile, Eminem remembered how hard it was to act cool during that meeting: “I’m looking at Dre like, ‘Dude, I see you on TV all the time — you’re one of my biggest influences ever in life.” Within hours of this meeting, the duo began working together in the studio. Dre found the young rapper a beat, and Em began spitting right away, applying lyrics to what would eventually become ‘The Real Slim Shady’.
Since that meeting, Eminem and Dre formed an unbreakable bond which saw the battle rapper from Detroit start working under his stewardship and become an even bigger star than his mentor. His association with Dre helped stop people from writing Shady off because he is a white rapper, which comes with a fair share of scepticism.
With Dre’s stamp of approval, Eminem was on a one-way ticket to greatness.
